Supply List for Drawing Structural Portraits
If you prefer to use charcoal:
Thin vine charcoal
Generals charcoal pencil. A variety can be useful, but at least have 2B or something similar (in the middle between hard and soft)
a medium-sized, clean, hogs bristle paintbrush
optional – a small chamois (Opus has them) for light erasing
If you prefer to use graphte:
Graphite Pencil 2B at minimum, 2 H and 4 B may be useful optional: blending stump
2+ sheets (at least 16×20) of drawing paper, white.
a kneadable eraser (also called “sticky eraser” or “gummy eraser”)
a regular erasera drawing board, or something bigger than your drawings that you can tape or attach your work to and can sit on an easel -it must be capable of holding your drawing and your reference photo side by side taped to the surface
Green painters tape or Artist’s Tape to attach the paper and your reference to the board.
A sturdy easel to work from-we are working upright instead of looking downward.
a slanted desktop drawing surface will suffice (inquire in advance to borrow one)
optional– a photo reference you’d like to use to work from, sized at 16x 20 inches. ****This will need to be ordered in advance. Please run any photos past the instructor first at firstname.lastname@example.org
Supply List for Portait Painting
If using Oils:
Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamblin’s Gamsol is the best and safest) Linseed oil
a small-sized jar WITH A LID to hold painting medium
a medium-sized jar WITH A LID or brush washing jar for cleaning brushes.
Hog’s Bristle Brushes, in a variety of sizes, approximately 2 small, 2 medium, 2 large. I like filberts
If using Acrylics:
Retarder or misting water bottle to keep paints moist longer
a medium-sized jar to hold water to rinse brushes
Acrylic painting brushes in a variety of sizes, approx 2 small, 2 medium, 2 large. I like filberts
This palette is based on earth pigments with warm and cool options of most primary colours. Keeping close to this palette will bring you results most similar to the instructors.
Titanium white or Flake White replacement
Cadmium red light
Alizarin crimson permanent
optional: sap green, cadmium yellow medium\
palette – disposable paper pallets are great for workshops.
2-3 surfaces to paint on, 16×20 in size, prepared and ready to paint on (It can be best to add another coat of gesso pre-primed canvases, or add 3 coats to wooden surfaces)
a palette knife for mixing paint, whatever size and shape works best for you.
Optional: gloves to keep paint off skin.
